"Don't trust Local Secrets - Tatties IS NOT "seventies style"..."
A review of Tatties Cafe Restaurant by Clare - Sunday 13th of August 2006
I remember the original Tatties, which opened in 1981 and was fabulous. We had a real baked potato fad in the 1980s and the original Tatties in Regent Street RULED. Recently, I read on the "Local Secrets" web site that the new Tatties is a "seventies style" cafe. I was surprised - but imagined it having a funky 1960s/70s decor. I decided to take my little nephew there for a birthday treat because he loves the 70s (or at least the telly version!). But the new Tatties, with its early 20th Century style writing on the sign outside and early 20th Century wall advertisements (like the original place in the 80s)was not "seventies style" at all. The decor, the layout, the architecture owed NOTHING to the 1970s. There have been cafes styled like this for a very long time. The food wasn't bad, the service was good, but don't listen to "Local Secrets" - it seems that one of their reviewers simply likes to label everything "70s" - even cafes which were established in the 1980s and display 1920s advertisements as wall decorations! My nephew, expecting a 70s style cafe as I was advised by Local Secrets, was really disappointed - and thanks to "Local Secrets" (but no fault of Tatties) the day was spoiled.
