"American Exp Travellers Cheques Not What They Purport to Be"
A review of American Express Europe by G Donahue - Monday 8th of October 2007
Hidden Charges: As a Platinum member I was told I would be able to buy AmExp T.C.'s in Euros without a charge. There was no charge but the rate they used was $1.41 when it was $1.38 USD to Euro. Unable to Encash AmExp T.C.s No business I found would accept these T.C.'s. No bank in Belgium or Nederland would encash them accept ABN Amro and only at Schipol Airport for a 7.5% fee. GWK would encash them for 5% fee. (These are Euro cheques) American Express has no offices in Belgium or Netherlands. The encashing information on the American Express Website is wrong and their customer service line is not helpful nor has accurate info. (e.g. CitiBank, Fortis and Dexia will not accept these cheques) Before attempting to encash these T.C.'s anywhere, it is best to contact the bank or business directly--not American Express. Am Exp does not have up to date, accurate information. Better yet, don't use these at all and rely soley on debit cards for cash,
