"2007 - A much-improved pub"
A review of Golden Hind by Lord Autumnbottom - Wednesday 21st of November 2007
This being a local of mine I've been a regular for several years and can say that it's improved enormously as a result of the smoking ban. But it's not just the cleaner air which is a benefit but the absence of the chain-smoking crowd. Once there was a hard core group of knuckle-grazers round the bar who eye-balled anyone outside their circle: women, anyone not wearing vests or sporting fab tattoos. But they've gone; in a puff of smoke, so to speak. In their place are science park workers, language school staffers and students then a mixture across the board of young, old and middle-aged. The big sports screens are still there for those who want to watch. Some people read. On Friday nights there's the Cambridge Folk Club upstairs. The landlord, Pat - from Manchester - seems a genuinely good bloke who can be coaxed into giving a tune himself on guitar occasinally. Definitely a place on the up.
