"Never again."
A review of Earl Of Derby by Helen Thorp - Sunday 13th of January 2008
I stayed at the Earl of Derby for one night in January of this year. The room we were given was large and spacious but had many things wrong with it. The carpet was ill-fitting and covered in dust. The bath room however was by far, worse. I have stayed on campsites where, in my opinion, the shower and toilet facilities were to a much higher standard. The floor was dirty and incredibly unappealing to stand on, the toilet roll holder was a piece of rusty metal bent into a hook shape, the bath had mould growing in the grout of the tiles all around the bath and up the wall, the rail the shower curtain was hung on was covered in rust, the stand that the sink was set into was covered in dust and dirt, the toilet took two hands to flush as it was so stiff and even then did not flush adequately, there was no soap provided, only sashes of shampoo/shower gel (the deep blue colour of a chemical toilet)and the door was intermittent, sometimes locking when the lock hadn't even been turned. Also when unfolding one of the bath towels provided I found a dead spider. The cold tap over the bath did not work at all on arrival, so after a day walking round Cambridge we were unable to have a shower or bath to freshen up before going out for the evening. To be fair the staff did get this problem fixed before we returned from our evening out but it was just one more thing to add to our list of unsatisfactory observations. The breakfast, which was included, was to a good standard and free car parking was available during the whole time we were there but I felt this did not in any way make up for the comments made above, especially in relation to the price paid for the room. I would not recommend staying here to anyone who is looking to pay this sort of price for a night away.
