"Unsecured or secured?"

My partners ex-wife we have just found out has a secured loan on their house (it's still in joint names) We asked how without my partners consent could this be and she says it was originally an unsecured loan and welcome made it into a secure one? Never heard of this before? Has anyone else? HELP!
