A review of Saffron Brasserie by David King written on Friday 23rd of April 2010
I went to this restaurant during a midweek lunchtime. This, I believe, is when you see these places at their worst. The waiter (dressed in T-shirt + jeans) continued speaking on his mobile 'phone as I was handed the menu. I had to ask for drinks + poppadoms as they were not offered.
I ordered dal soup as a starter which admittedly arrived promptly. However, it was tasteless. My main course was chicken madras with mushroom rice. Madras by definition is a "fairly hot" dish yet there seemed to be no inclusion of spices at all apart from turmeric making the sauce vivid orange. Indeed the sauce seemed like very bland tomato puree made orange with a liberal amount of onions. Meanwhile the mushroom(s) in the mushroom rice were so tiny that they were almost impossible to detect and it contained lots of onion yet was tasteless. There was no clever use of spices which identifies good Indian food. Indeed I wonder whether the chef was from the Indian continent or had cooked this type of food before. The waiter failed to ask whether I wished to have anything else and presented me with the bill the moment I finished my last mouthful of food. I was determined not to tip due to the poor quality of food + service etc. yet had to wait 10 minutes for my change! A terrible experience. .
