"Nothing but a horrendous experience!"

Purchased a car privately that had been MOT'd by Over Garage a couple of weeks previously. It passed its MOT and the garage had not supplied any advisory notes on the MOT certificate. A visit to an alternative garage the next day revealed that the car had significant damage from an accident (is a write-off). A twisted chassis had left the engine significantly mis-aligned with 2 broken engine mounts, a misaligned gearbox, a mis-aligned and significantly damaged driveshaft due to the impact, misaligned headlamps which had been adjusted significantly so as just to pass its MOT, CV gaiter split, bonnet catch damaged from impact etc. I was advised by 3 different garages not to drive the car.

When I first contacted Over Garage to find out how the car had passed the MOT, I was informed that the damage and mechanical condition of the car had been noted and this discussed with the cars owner but that they did not legally have to add anything to the advisory section. However, in a subsequent conversation (once the 28 day time period had lapsed for me to report the garage to VOSA) I was told that the MOT tester had categorically not noticed or discussed any of the above damage or mechanical faults!

I cannot understand how any reputable mechanic or garage failed to notice during an MOT that a cars engine was not sitting in the correct position, that the engine mounts were broken, that the driveshaft was significantly damaged and misaligned, the gearbox misaligned, badly positioned headlamps.... I certainly would not trust them with the safety of my vehicle. .
