A review of Hills Road Sixth Form College by S - Thursday 8th of April 2004
I think it's a great shame that people did not find their years at Hills as fulfilling and engaging as they should have.
It's academic and extra-curricular opportunities are incomparable, this was perhaps highlighted more for me by coming from Chesterton CC where financial constaints meant classes were huge and facilities were tired.
Hills itself has fantastic facilities, some of the brightest teachers in the country, and a conscientious attitude to education. However, of course it will not the perfect option for everyone. The work is taxing, and demands alot from students, but it is definitely a case of what you put in you get out. (Although one could argue it could give more support to students who find sixth form work more challenging than expected.) I personally was greatly involved in school drama and so have seen the physical effects first hand.
Also, unfortunately nowadays, all of us students are aware of the importance of education as a means to an end, rather than a means in itself, and there is no avoiding the fact that having Hills Road on the old UCAS form will work greatly to your advantage. (As a state school with public school facilities and oxbridge grades achieved.) I am at Bristol Uni myself and remember a lecturer telling me in my first year that they always looked favourably on Hills Road as they knew immediately the students would be bright and hardworking.
Irrelevant of that, Hills provided me with the ability to do the things I wanted to do, in an environment that encourages it (and doesn't label you a geek as a result!) with people who you'll remain in contact with long after those two brief years have lapsed.
