A review of Kwik-Fit by Saabman - Sunday 30th of May 2004
I visited a Kwik-Fit centre last week on Fountainbridge in Edinburgh to get a puncture repaired. The fitter informed me that I had picked up a nail in the tyre, which had gone through the side wall, destroying the tyre. As he hadn't any remoulds it would be advisable to replace all FOUR tyres, for which HE could do me a deal! Since the tyres were all newly fitted, I did not want to spend money on a set of new tyres. I asked him to show me the nail and where it had been?. He kept saying "I will show you in a minute" but never seemed to get time to actually show me. When I insisted he show me the "nail" he said there was no nail left in the tyre, it probably came out somewhere along the road. I then insisted he show me where the hole was, so another fitter -older and much wiser- fitted the tyre to the rim and inflated it. He then placed it a container of water to look for air bubbles rising, which would denote where the puncture was. As a challenge I bet the younger fitter £5 that his colleague would not find a hole to which the fitter just walked away.! My original tyre was refitted to my vehicle and I was sent on my way with an apology from the youg fitter and no charge from the centre! If I had not Insisted on seeing the nail or puncture hole I would have purchased 4 new tyres I did not need. I believe fitters at Kwik-Fit are on commision for everything they sell but this I consider to be totally unacceptable. I would like to draw this to Kwik-Fit Head Office and ask are they aware of this practice.
