"Worst bus station in the country?"A review of Bus Station - Stagecoach Cambus by Phil Baker - Saturday 10th of July 2004Advertisements
Drummer Street in Cambridge must be a strong contender for the title of worst bus station in the country. The main part of the station is disorganised. Oh, there's a lot of pretence at it being properly organised. But then a bus parks up for half an hour in a space. The one which needs that space NOW parks up next to it. And suddenly a bus that should be in bay 4 stops in bay 11 instead. Clearly a recipe for passengers missing their bus. Meanwhile outside in Emmanuel Street - the Drummer Street extension - the road frequently blocks with too many buses arriving at once. A bus which has ten minutes till it should leave takes a spot at the side of the road. Another needing the same spot stops in the middle of the road. There's one on the other side too. And then a taxi comes the other way and the whole lot locks up. No-one can move. And then there's that wonderful Cambridge style joke with the notices on the coach stops - "Welcome to Cambridge. No Parking." Of course we can't have cars parking there. But there's something gloriously oxymoronic about it. In a way it sums up the whole mess of the whole bus station. |
