I enjoy Chez Gerard in Cambridge for its stylish, dynamic feel and reasonable food at slightly less than reasonable prices. What I dislike is the pretentiousness of diners. The wine is brought to the table and the 'taster' then makes great show of trying the wine...swilling it, sniffing it, rolling around the mouth. Well, this is not appropriate behaviour for the real question which is 'Is this wine corked?'. The waiter is not asking the diner if he likes the wine and certainly would not take it back simply because the diner 'doesn't care for the taste'. How many of these 'tasters' would have the nerve to send wine back on this basis? None, I would confidently guess... Knock it off, and stop making prats of yourselves
