A review of Marks & Spencer by Mel. written on Friday 8th of December 2006
Hello Nicola...
I understand how you feel, I really do. Like you, I too work in retail and attend College. Ever since the age of 16, I have worked in shop after shop after shop (I'll be 23 in February, 2007). Over the years, I have literally grown to hate the public as most people nowadays are so very rude and inconsiderate of the feelings of retail staff and shop assistants. A lot of the public just seem to think that they know the answers to everything and sometimes mock and intimidate you, especially when you're new to your job and are still on training. They always seem to think that they could do so much better than you.
In one of my past jobs, a man once started giving me a hard time because he thought that I wasn't working fast enough on the till (I was only 17 at the time and new to the job). I got so angry that I actually challenged him to come into the till and show me how to use it. He shut his filthy mouth very tightly after that, LOL!
Anyway, I have had to put up with the verbal abuse from past-customers so many times that it's no wonder I eventually just walked straight out the door and never went back.
Take my day at work today, for example. In the shop I work in, most of the customers are very kind, friendly and have a great sense of humour. It's so easy to have a laugh and enjoy yourself on the job at the same time. However, today I had a woman and her 2/3 daughters come up to my till and dump a huge pile of clothes in front of me. The till I was working on wasn't big enough to hold all of the clothes so it was difficult to put everything through quickly and pack it all at the same time. At one point while swiping everything through, I tried to swipe through a pair of shoes and sometimes shoes can be difficult to swipe, for some reason. I said in a non-offensive and joking manner, "I hate shoes," meaning that I hate trying to swipe them. To my surprise, she took offence to that and didn't say anything to me at all for the rest of her purchse. She just looked very moody. Also, when I accidentally picked up her purse to swipe it thinking that it was just another purchase (it looked brand new!) she snatched it out of my hand without saying anything. I apologised, explaining my action and handed her her bag of shopping. I said "goodbye" to her nicely and she just walked off without saying a single word or even looking at me. The cheeky bitch! As she left, I said to myself under my breath, "thank you. Don't come back," LOL!
Could somebody please tell me what I said or did that was so offensive?! .
