A review of La Tasca by Nat written on Monday 9th of July 2007
This was to have been a special and rare night out for me, with the coveted company of an old friend from London. We foolishly chose Pizza Express in Cambridge. We ordered, skipping a starter. Our pizzas arrived dry, unappetising-looking (and tasting) with the most scant gesture of any toppings. Prior to that, I ordered a glass of house red wine, which arrived in a dirty glass. The waitress offered to "pour the wine into a new glass"...er, since when would a "new glass" alter the fact that the wine was tainted from a drity one? I insisted on a fresh glass and fresh wine, of course. When it arrived, there was a dead fruit fly in it. I ordered a third, which when finally tasted, confirmed that the wine was undrinkable anyway.
The service was slow and sullen. Clearly the demoralised waiters were not likely to ask if we were "Enjoying our meal" as I'm sure they knew what response they might get. The nearly empty restaurant that late June Saturday evening spoke volumes.
We were very disappointed and will NEVER go to a Pizza Express again. We felt we were doing two prospective customers a favour as we left. We advised them urgently and in no uncertain terms NOT to bother with the restaurant. The couple turned on their heels gratefully. I hope this serves as a warning for anyone else considering Cambridge's Pizza "Depress"! .
