A review of Aldi by Arnie written on Sunday 2nd of December 2007
This is the reason for some manufacturers' high salt levels in food products.
Salt is hygroscopic and therefore will absorb water.
This allows manufacturers to add water to many meat products, thereby increasing the product's weight.
Hence more profit.
More water = less meat per unit weight.
If you look at Aldi's tinned fruit, most if not all, is in syrup. It is cheaper to use sugar rather than natural fruit juices.
That's why my wife stays clear of these products.
We buy bananas, tomatoes and some vegetables from Aldi because they are generally cheaper than Tesco.
For real savings try Farm Foods if there is a store near you. .
