A review of Aldi by Teresa Seed written on Friday 27th of June 2008
I want to congratulate Aldi on the quality of their broccoli at present (NW UK). I have been learning a bit about quality in veggies and passed up the opportunity to purchase some in another "high quality" store which had holes in the centre stalk (lack of minerals), as well as a bit of browning and the 'flowers' were large and coarse looking.
At Aldi I was delighted to see fine flowered florets, no holes whatsoever in the centre stalks, no browning and a pleasant fresh appearance. As for taste, well, I don't eat broccoli for its delightful flavour and I haven't done a taste test to compare, but it was quite reasonable. Of course this should be highly important too.
Please pass on my compliments to the grower (if anyone reads this who can). I think quality in produce is well due for more attention by everyone. If it hasn't got high minerals and sugars, it won't do you so much good, 5 a day or no. Maybe one day produce will have a quality rating and not just for appearance ....
