A review of Travellers Rest by Tom C written on Monday 23rd of February 2009
Beefeaters do what they do - you either like them or you don't. I like them. You get simple, predictable meals at a reasonable price. What this branch needs to do is improve the bar service. I think I visit about once every two months, and every single time the most straightforward of requests is greeted as if I've just made a provocative assertion about 18th century metaphysics! Take our last visit: a colleague wanted a double whisky. We had to wait for ten minutes to be served because a family was dominating the bar area and adding more and more to their order - okay, tolerable, but we were completely ignored throughout the time, no 'be right with you' or 'soory for the delay' - nothing. Then we finally got served. The bar person immediately reached for a ludicrously tall glass - for a double whisky! - and started filling it with ice. When my colleague managed to attract his attention, he removed the ice and handed him the tall glass with a slim layer of whisky. 'Can I have a tiny water jug, please, so I can dilute it a little?' he asked. Bemused, the bar person went off and came back with a huge litre jug full of water! We gave up and paid and went off. Now, really: can't the staff have enough training to do these things properly, or at least with a bit of common sense? Nowadays I dread having to ask for anything at all..
