To be honest, self-serve tills very, very rarely short change a customer.

It is more often the customer mis-interpreting their receipt. Looking at the amounts in your review, I am wonder if one item was actually £4.23 but the total bill was, in fact, £6.23, which would make the till right in asking for another £1.98.

I must admit that has happened to me and I have learnt never to argue with a machine!!! Maybe you should check your receipt again?.
