A review of Café Rouge by Phill Ford written on Sunday 16th of January 2011
Booked for dinner at 8pm using the Cafe Rouge website. Arrived at 7.55pm, no record of our booking and the plce was heaving! Waited for approximately 10 minutes to be seated in the first floor front area. Temperature in this area was around 28degC despite outside temperature of 10degC, no ventilation or a/c in this area making it almost unbearable. Further 10min wait to order drinks, which included a white wine that arrived in a glass so fresh from the dishwasher it was impossible to hold the stem. Nothing like hot white wine as an apparatif. Things declined further as after the 20 min wait for our starters to arrive, only 5 of the six starter ordered made it to the table. Apparently our 6th starter had been stolen from the kitchen by another waitress. Hey ho, 6th starter arrives as the other 5 are being finished. From the point where the starters were finally cleared to the main course arriving took just over 40 minutes, this would probably have been even longer had we not complained at around the 30 min mark! Our table consisted of 3 steaks, 2 chicken dishes and a Beef Bourguignon. The steaks were all tough and the chef appears to be only able to cook steak as 'rare to medium' irrespective of what has been ordered. The other dishes were considered ok, fair to middling. After the main courses were cleared there was another intermidable wait until the dessert menu was profered, unfortunately the waitress informed us that all the Creme Brelle dishes, Brownies and Strawberry Ice Cream were all 'off' this menu. We declined the remaining meagre dessert choices and headed for home after paying a touch under £30 a head for indifferent starters, poor main courses and nothing from the dessert menu. Rip off Britain at it's very best! My advice would be to give Cafe Rouge, I imagine even McDonalds have better organisation, service and choice.
