A review of The Med by Helen written on Friday 27th of May 2011
My friend and I went to the Med on a Thursday evening. Admittedly, 6.15 is an early start to an evening but we were not terribly impressed. The bar was confusing, there were no menus out and a handful of plates pretending to be tapas under a glass counter. We eventually found the restaurant tucked away behind the toilets but everything was dark. Asking at the bar we were given menus and decided to sit where we could be seen rather than brave the restaurant. The menus had no mention of tapas, which is why we had come, and upon asking we were told that the plates at the end of the bar were it and that they were changed daily. Odd. The food was a choice of grills, salads, pasta or pizza.
We selected chicken kebabs with salad and fries which came fairly quickly. The kebabs were excellent, big pieces of meat marinaded in something tasty with a yoghurt dip. The fries were crisp and thin and lovely. The salad was a very small handful of leaves and a piece of onion which was disappointing. Not really a balanced plate - I would have liked a bigger salad or some meditteranean veg or something.
I was not offered a menu for desserts.
On the whole, I came away with an impression of an establisment that doesn't know what it is. If it is going to set itself up as a restaurant then it needs to be a little more professional and a little less confusing. The fact that there was no one in the restaurant at all by the time we left and that one couple came in and looked at the menu and didn't stay suggests that, despite the excellent cooks, the proprieters will probably stay no longer than the last people..
