A review of The World Famous Comfort Cafe by Nigel Owen written on Wednesday 7th of April 2010
I’ve had breakfast here with my family of four after staying in the travel lodge across the other side of the car park. I cannot for the life of me see why this is world famous…
We wanted to avoid the little chef (which is slightly more conveniently located to the travel lodge) as we didn’t want a very over priced average breakfast. Usually we jump back into the car and head to the nearest Tesco/Asda/Morrisons café for breakfast. However with the prospect of an independent café with walking distance we decided to give the Comfort Café a go.
If you can see past the slightly odd combination of toy shop and café then the overall layout of the place is OK. In the two main rooms are displays of very overpriced toys for sale. Quite why people would buy toys in a café is beyond me - and I was travelling with a 6 and 3yr old.
With a full English consisting of one sausage, one rasher of bacon, a few beans, a slice of toast and not much more for just under £6 I got the same ‘I don’t think this is good value’ feeling I’d have expected from the little chef. The food was edible but just average. It both lacked in food quality and portion size and we left distinctly disappointed. The other bitter taste in the mouth was being charged £3 for a small (single portion) of breakfast cereal which was an absolute rip off.
World famous in my mind means having some unique feature such as unlimited tea and toast with every full english. That would be the sort of café I would like to get comfy in.
