"Why should staff be polite when customers are so rude!!"

A review of Marks & Spencer by Nicola stevens written on Tuesday 1st of August 2006

I work in retail myself (as well as being at university) and to be honest its not surprising at times customer assistants are not overly friendly with customers. Retail is a poor wage and customer assistants work hard for a small amount of money. Customers are often rude abusive and think if they stamp their feet they will get their own way. Well think again stamping your feet only makes customer assistants less willing to help. Manners cost nothing, but customers think that assistants are below them and at their beck and call. Yes assistants are there to help but it does not say in job description "you will be expected to tolerate being belittled by customers and treated like crap" before customers start moaning maybe they should look at how they treat customer assistants..
